Best Countryside Pubs Near Tiverton
Gogwell House is surrounded by good country pubs, and the best of them reward a walk. Our three favourites come first, followed by more good pubs within a short drive.
The Butterleigh Inn, Butterleigh
The closest pub to Gogwell, around two miles away on foot. It is a traditional inn serving English pub classics, with a great selection of local beers and ciders, log fires in the winter and a garden for the summer. The walk sets off with the swimming pool on your left, down the footpath, through the field and along the country lanes to the village.
Fisherman's Cot, Bickleigh
About three miles from Gogwell. This pub has a special place in many people's memories of Gogwell, as it offers a welcome pint after the walk down the Exe Valley Way. It overlooks the River Exe and Bickleigh Bridge and is a traditional carvery-style pub. Bickleigh Mill nearby serves delicious Devon cream teas.
Cadeleigh Arms, Cadeleigh
About four miles from Gogwell. A lovely little local pub in the village of Cadeleigh, the perfect place to settle into on a cold winter's afternoon in front of the roaring log fire.
Beyond our own regulars, these pubs are also well worth a visit.
The Queen's Head, Tiverton
Under two miles from Gogwell. A small, old, traditional pub in a largely unspoilt building on the back streets of Tiverton, with its rear entrance facing Tiverton Castle. Dogs are welcome and there is a beer garden.
The Globe Inn, Sampford Peverell
About four miles from Gogwell. A traditional village inn that backs onto the Grand Western Canal, close to Tiverton Parkway station. It serves food, is popular with families, and welcomes dogs in the bar and in the garden at the back.
The Exeter Inn, Bampton
About six miles from Gogwell. A 15th-century Devon longhouse on the edge of Bampton, refurbished in 2019, with a garden and rooms. It serves food at lunchtime and in the evening, so it is a good stop on a day out towards Exmoor.
The Quarryman's Rest, Bampton
About seven miles from Gogwell. A Georgian pub on Briton Street with log fires, relaxed rooms of wooden tables and sofas, and a walled garden at the back. Food has often come from visiting pop-ups rather than a regular kitchen, so check before you go.
The Swan, Bampton
About seven miles from Gogwell. A village pub with rooms on Station Road, known for its food and independent beers. It changed hands in September 2026 and has reopened under a new team, so check the current menu and opening days.
The Ring of Bells, Cheriton Fitzpaine
About seven miles from Gogwell. A thatched pub dating back to the 13th century, serving interesting food in a relaxed atmosphere. At the time of writing it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so check before you set off.
The Masons Arms, Knowstone
About 12 miles from Gogwell, on the edge of Exmoor. A 13th-century pub that holds a Michelin star in the 2026 guide, so book well ahead. The owners of many years put it up for sale in 2024, so check the current position.
Pubs change hands and opening times change, so it is always worth a quick call before you set off. Distances are as the crow flies from Gogwell, so allow longer by road.
